Description

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - A man who allegedly charged the U.S. Capitol with a loaded shotgun Tuesday afternoon is now in police custody.

Late Tuesday, U.S. Capitol Police announced Carter Camacho of Smyrna, Georgia was arrested on multiple charges, including Unlawful Activities, Carrying a Rifle without a License, Unregistered Firearm, and Unregistered Ammunition.

During the incident, U.S. Capitol Police said the 18-year-old suspect ran hundreds of yards toward the West side of the Capitol here wearing a tactical vest, tactical gloves, and additional rounds for his loaded shotgun.

The threat ended quickly.

“This individual was challenged by United States Capitol Police officers in order to drop the weapon, which he did comply with,” US Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said. “He laid down the weapon, and then laid down on the ground and was taken into custody by our United States Capitol Police officers.”

The gunman arrived in a white Mercedes SUV, which police say was not registered in his name, and parked on Maryland Avenue.

Inside the SUV, police found a Kevlar helmet and gas mask.

Police say the suspect had multiple addresses. They are still looking into his motive, and whether he intended to harm members of Congress.

Lawmakers are currently on recess. They’ll return early next week for the annual “State of the Union” address with President Trump.
