ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A lifelong love of working on cars has grown into a new business for one Albany father and son.

Top Teir Technicians recently opened in Albany and is run by Robert and Rykese Mathis, something they’ve wanted to do since Rykese was a toddler.

“Man. It’s a great joy. Um, it actually takes me back to when I first realized he wanted to follow in my footsteps. He was two years old working on the car, so I ended up looking for him. And as I saw him, he was laying on the ground, just laid back. His big wheel is sitting up on a brick wall. Ever since he was two, bro. I knew he was gonna be in it,” Robert Mathis said.

Robert has always worked on cars with his son right there with him. Rykese is currently training to join the army reserves after recently graduating from Monroe High School. Robert said it’s an indescribable feeling seeing his son accomplish so much.

“I’m overjoyed. Words cannot explain how I feel and what he has done on his own and being the man he wants to be. And, you know, following in my footsteps. Making a better and greater legacy,” he said.

Mathis said that to him being a father is all about being a mentor and encourages other dads to help guide their children.

“Well, it means great stewardship, you know, to be able to show your kid how to move and navigate life. You want to be able to show them some of the mistakes you made and then help them avoid them. So I wanted to give him what I did not have,” he said.

For Robert and Rykese, the shop is more than just a place to fix cars. It’s the result of years spent working side by side and proof that the lessons passed from father to son can turn into a successful family business.
