Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – With many low-income seniors and families struggling to afford basic necessities, the Albany Housing Authority (AHA) is launching a holiday adoption program aimed at bringing relief and hope this season.

AHA currently serves around 1,100 residents, including roughly 200 senior citizens. Many rely on limited income and assistance, making everyday essentials like food, clothing, and household items difficult to afford.

“Sometimes I struggle with my groceries,” said Darien Whitaker, a longtime Albany Housing resident. “I get a little bit of food stamps and I have to run around and get groceries, so thank God for these organizations.”

But food is only part of the challenge. Whitaker lives with a disability and has battled rheumatoid arthritis in her hips for nearly two decades. The condition has made everyday tasks increasingly difficult.

“Somebody’s got to help see about me. The older I get, the more I hurt. But I try not to tell people,” she said. Despite the pain, Whitaker still loves to cook for her grandchildren and hopes to do so this holiday.

The Albany Housing Authority’s holiday adoption program will randomly select four senior residents and four families from each housing property to be “adopted” for the season. Those selected are matched with adoptees who receive a wish list and provide gifts or donations. Requests range from household items and groceries to clothing, cleaning supplies and, in some cases, monetary help to cover bills.

AHA leaders say the goal is simple: brighten the holidays for neighbors who need it most. “You never know what someone is going through during the holiday season,” said Residential Services Coordinator Briana Carter. “To be able to share love and support is important.”

How to Participate:

Those interested in adopting a resident can contact AHA by email at [email protected] or [email protected], or call 229-434-4505.
