ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -The city of Albany is investing in the safety of neighborhoods around the downtown area.

The Downtown Streetscape Project is a multi-site initiative to improve pedestrian safety and the overall character of downtown Albany. The city is prioritizing updates to sidewalks, streetlights, and streetscape elements.

City commissioners are reviewing a plan that finalizes pedestrian lighting and gives ideas for sidewalk design — an important step before construction can begin. Downtown City Manager Lequrica Gaskins said G-DOT is funding the effort to ensure both beautification and safety are prioritized.

“When you go downtown now, you will see that some of our streetlight poles, even though they’re there, they’re not necessarily unified,” Gaskins said. “You’ll see that some of the sidewalks aren’t crumbling, so there’s a need for improvement.”

The City Commission is designated to vote on those change orders at the end of the month.
