Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -Albany is receiving more than $1 million in federal funding to support housing development near the city’s medical district.

Congressman Sanford Bishop presented the funds, which will kick off Phase One of the Albany Medical District Housing Plan.
The project focuses on an area known as the Lighthouse Parcels, located between West First and West Second Avenue near North Monroe and Madison Street. The money will help prepare infrastructure for 25 new housing lots that will be a mix of rentals and privately-owned homes.

City leaders said the funding will create opportunities for contractors to build affordable homes.
“We are using public funds to create a situation where contractors can come in and build affordable homes for families and do so. It’s an advantageous business situation for them,” a city official said.

City leaders said they hope the neighborhood attracts hospital staff, while also drawing people from various professions.
