Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Albany and Lee County leaders are looking to resurface one of the roads that connects the two counties.
Commuters feel the traffic impact on the two busiest highways in the Albany areas — US 82 and US 19. Both connect Lee and Dougherty counties. Ledo Road is a two and a half mile connector between the two highways, where traffic continues to grow.
Plans are now in motion to resurface Ledo Road.
Brian Miller is the owner of Bam Property Rental. His office sits right at the end of Ledo Road and US-19. He said heavy traffic makes it difficult for him to enter and exit his property.
“It’s kind of difficult getting in and out. The traffic has really picked up here, something would have to be done probably,” Miller said.
The resurfacing project is estimated at nearly $2 million; Lee County will cover about 75% of the cost and Albany will pay around $505,000 from TSPLOST funds.
While some residents welcome the resurfacing, others say the city needs to do more than just fix the pavement. The commercial growth in Lee County has also made widening the road a hot topic of discussion.
“Trying to come out from the roundabout you get stuck in traffic and you can’t get out right there,” Crystal Corbett said. “And when you’re going to 82, people are trying to, instead of going to the red light, cut across to where they aren’t supposed to.”
This project is still in its beginning phases. Albany and Lee County are currently working on a Memorandum of Understanding to allow Lee County to open bids for the resurfacing project.
