Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - An Albany native is being recognized by the U.S. Navy for her service overseas.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Karah Carpenter is assigned to USS Georgia based out of Kings Bay. Carpenter serves as a submariner and is a part of a small crew of Navy personnel who are continuing a 125-year tradition of service under the sea.
Carpenter joined the Navy four years ago. She says the skills and values that she needed to serve her country are similar to the ones that she learned at home in Albany.
“I learned growing up that everyone comes from different backgrounds, but in the end, we’re all striving to be happy and provide for our families. I also learned not to take everything so seriously, especially when you’re having a bad day.”
According to U.S. Navy officials, strategic deterrence is our nation’s ultimate insurance. Kings Bay, where Carpenter is stationed, is the homeport of ballistic and guided submarines. They are capable of conduction operations in the Atlantic, Arctic, Eastern Pacific, and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea.
