ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A death investigation is underway after a body was found on the Turner Job Corps campus on Sunday, June 21.

According to the Albany Police Department (APD), police were dispatched before 10 p.m. Sunday after a 21-year-old man was reported unconscious outside the campus’ cafeteria.

APD Police Chief Michael Persley said that campus staff was performing CPR on the victim before emergency responders arrived.

“That is not a normal sight to see, so those staff members will more than likely need some counseling as well, also for the students who are there,” Chief Persley said.

According to an incident report, earlier that day, the victim had been transported to a local hospital for a dislocated shoulder. Witnesses on the campus said the victim was ‘acting strange’ on Sunday and described him as a ‘normally quiet person.’

Chief Persley called the circumstances ‘suspicious,’ but said investigators are not ruling out possible suicide.

“Even though it may look like one thing, we want to wait [for] the results from the autopsy before any official ruling is made, which will come from the medical examiner’s office,” he added.

The Turner Job Corps is a federally funded career training program operated by the U.S. Department of Labor. In 2025, the Albany campus reported training roughly 500 students.

A representative from Turner Job Corps said the Georgia Department of Labor is also assisting with the investigation.
