Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Albany State University Director of Athletics Dr. Kristene Kelly has released a statement remembering Amaya Williams, who was one of three people killed in a wrong-way head-on collision crash in Baldwin County, Alabama.
The statement reads in part: “Amaya Williams immediately stood out because she was confident, articulate, and deeply impressive. I took this photo because I was so struck by her presence. I never imagined I would never get the chance to post it. This loss is heartbreaking and a sobering reminder of how fragile life truly is. My deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all who are grieving.”

According to Broadcastify audio, dispatchers said: “There’s going to be a head-on collision near the 38 mile marker in the southbound lane on I-65. We didn’t have additional calls of a caller reporting a truck going northbound in the southbound lane.”
One witness said her husband was driving when they both saw a pickup truck driving the wrong way.
“[The truck was] just driving like normal in the fast lane we couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” she said.
Three killed in Tuesday night crash
State troopers say 84-year-old Simon Hadley of Bay Minette, Alabama was driving the truck. He died at the hospital.
21-year-old Amaya Williams of Albany and 49-year-old Keithrick Williams of Auburn were in the car Hadley’s truck collided with. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.
An eyewitness to the crash said the truck appeared to be traveling northbound in the southbound lanes at the time of the collision.
“We pulled over to the side, right there about mile marker 38 is what I told 911, and as we called 911, we heard the collision,” the witness said. “When 911 transferred me to state troopers, she was telling the troopers ‘we’ve gotten several calls about a wrong way driver and this lady is saying there’s now a collision.’”
The crash happened when Baldwin County, Alabama was under a Dense Fog Advisory, leaving suspicion on whether fog was a factor.
