Description

PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) — Today marks one year since the death of former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States.

Carter died at his home in Plains on December 29, 2024, after nearly two years of receiving hospice care. He made history as the longest-living U.S. president and remains the only president to reach the age of 100. Carter is also the only U.S. president from the state of Georgia and served in the White House from 1977 to 1981.

Following his death, a series of funeral services and memorials were held to honor his life and legacy. On January 4, Carter’s remains were transported by motorcade from Phoebe Sumter to Atlanta. The procession traveled through several significant locations, including the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, the Carter family home, and President Carter’s boyhood home.

In Atlanta, Carter lay in repose from January 4 through January 7 before services were held in Washington, D.C. On January 9, his remains returned to Plains for a private funeral service attended by close family and friends. A final procession through the town followed, before Carter was transported to his home for a private burial service.

Since the passing of both President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, numerous tributes and memorials have been held in their honor. One of the dedications WALB covered was the renaming of the post office in Plains as the “Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Post Office” in July.

During that event, the Carters’ son, Chip Carter, shared what the recognition meant to their family.

Chip Carter, son of President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter, “They would love it if they were here. It’s emotional. The people of Plains, these are Dad’s friends and his neighbors, people he walked down the street with. He knew everyone and their children by name. It’s been a close-knit community, and I’d like for people around the world to come and see this little place that started my parents off.”

The dedication honored the former president and first lady for their lifelong service and commitment not only to Plains and South Georgia, but to the nation and the world.
