ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — On December 29, 2024, Former President Jimmy Carter died peacefully at his Plains, Georgia home He was 100 years old.

The peanut farming president made history in October 2024 when he became the first former U.S. president to reach the age of 100.

Presidential legacy and early achievements

Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was the first president to be born in a hospital and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946.

During his presidency, Carter created the Department of Energy, Department of Education and FEMA, which has helped hundreds of thousands of Americans access disaster relief.

Post-presidency accomplishments

Carter wrote several books after his time in the White House, many of which became bestsellers. He won four Grammy Awards for Best Audiobook, Narration and Storytelling Recording.

Carter was known as the man who never retired, continuing his humanitarian work well into his later years.

After his death on December 29, people traveled to South Georgia from around the world to honor the president from the Peach State.
