ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Albany State University (ASU) is celebrating a historic achievement following the resounding success of its Theatre program’s production of Fences in collaboration with Theatre Albany.
Staged in March 2025, Fences by August Wilson made history as the first all-Black production in Theatre Albany’s 91-year history, marking a powerful milestone in local performing arts. The production featured a Black playwright, director, cast, and crew — a groundbreaking achievement for both ASU and the broader Albany arts community.
The trailblazing production dominated Theatre Albany’s inaugural Costello Awards, which recognize excellence in the 2024–2025 season. Fences took home five of the six top honors, including:
- Leading Actor: Ta’Varis Wilson, Director of the ASU Theatre Program and Assistant Professor of Arts and Humanities
- Leading Actress: Erica Edwards, ASU Alumna (’07)
- Best Supporting Actor: Cleo Graham, ASU Alumnus (’25)
- Best Director: Ta’Varis Wilson
- Best Show: Fences

“These awards are a testament to the extraordinary talent, creativity, and commitment of our students, faculty, and collaborators,” said Wilson. “We are deeply proud of this milestone, which not only celebrates artistic excellence but also uplifts representation and storytelling in the performing arts, and our community partnership with Theatre Albany.”
ASU’s leadership in this production highlights the university’s strong commitment to providing transformative, real-world experiences for its students, while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts.
