VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) — A report of gunshots at a Valdosta apartment complex lead to an arrest and a stolen gun being recovered. The man who was arrested allegedly shot a vehicle’s window out with a stolen gun.
On Sunday, May 31, Valdosta Police (VPD) officers said they responded to the 1700 block of Northside Drive following reports of gunshots near the Lakeside Apartment complex.
A VPD investigation led the responding officer to a nearby gas station where the suspected shooter was located, according to a press release.
21-year-old Jaquan Mathis was identified as the alleged shooter based on his clothing and the description that was provided to the investigator, VPD said.
Police said Mathis ran from officers into a wooded area nearby when approached. Mathis reportedly appeared to have a gun in his waistband. Mathis surrendered the gun before officers were able to arrest him, according to VPD.
“Even as they were chasing him into the wooded area while he was holding on to a gun, they continued to pursue him until they were able to take him into custody. Their efforts resulted in a dangerous person being taken off the streets, as well as a stolen handgun being recovered.”
Mathis is charged with:
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon - felony
- Theft by receiving stolen property - felony
- Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony - felony
- Entering an auto with the intent to commit a theft - felony
- Criminal damage to property 2nd degree - felony
- Obstruction of an officer - misdemeanor
- Possession of marijuana - misdemeanor
- Discharging a firearm on the property of another - misdemeanor
The firearm that Mathis dropped was reported stolen from Moultrie, VPD said.
