SUMTER COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Prostate cancer screenings and early detection can save lives — just ask Americus brothers George and Michal Edge. Both men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and thanks to timely screenings and treatment, today they are cancer free.

Their story is a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection. “If it wasn’t for getting checked, I might not be here today,” George Edge shared. His brother Michal agreed, saying the diagnosis was difficult, but early treatment gave him the chance to beat cancer.

To help more men take control of their health, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center is hosting a free prostate cancer screening event on Saturday, Sept. 27. The event aims to raise awareness, encourage preventive care, and provide men in the community with critical access to screenings.

Healthcare leaders emphasize that prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, but survival rates are significantly higher when it’s detected early.

Men in the Americus area are urged to take advantage of this free opportunity and follow the Edge brothers’ example by making screenings a priority.
