DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) – After being postponed due to COVID-19 and Hurricane Helene, the Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County (CCAGCC) is bringing back its annual Silent Auction & Bake Sale to help families facing the financial burdens of childhood cancer.
The Silent Auction & Bake Sale will take place on Friday, September 26, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The following day, the Live Auction will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, preceded by dinner at 5:30 p.m. Dinner tickets are available for pre-sale.
CCAGCC was founded in honor of siblings Lauren and Jim.
Lauren was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 7 in 2001 and passed away in 2003, just two weeks before her 9th birthday.
Her brother, Jim, was diagnosed with Astrocytoma at age 6, later with Glioblastoma, and has also battled thyroid cancer, melanoma, and multiple recurring tumors. Jim continues his fight today, representing the ongoing challenges families face long after a childhood cancer diagnosis.
Volunteers like Tammy Morris and Suzanne Ray call themselves “working bees,” serving families across seven counties. They say it’s about more than financial help — it’s about love and support.
“The tears on her momma’s face the day that I went out there and she passed away and went to heaven. I will never forget it,” Morris recalled of one local family.
Lauren’s story was only the beginning of heartbreak.
“Everyone says lightning doesn’t strike twice, but it did for this family. Jim also got a brain tumor,” Morris said.
Jim is still fighting to this day. Advocates say cancer hasn’t taken his spark, even after other diagnoses. Every three months, the family waits for another scan and the doctor’s report.
“For the past 15 to 20 years, this family has lived scan to scan, waiting for that phone call,” Morris said.

Advocates say events like this auction raise money to be a “soft place for parents to land,” helping families cover costs like travel for treatment, utilities, groceries, and medical bills.
“We want to take away that burden and let you concentrate on getting your child well,” Ray said.
“That they don’t have to worry that this won’t be taken care of because I woke up and my child has cancer,” Morris added.
Along with artwork and other donations up for bid Friday and Saturday, organizers say every dollar raised will go directly to families battling childhood cancer in Coffee County and surrounding counties.
Throughout the week, donations can be dropped off, and T-shirts can be picked up at the Coffee County Childhood Cancer building.
More details, including a list of auction items, can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
