AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - One Americus mother’s dream of homeownership is now a reality with the help of the Fuller Center for Housing and local volunteers.

Students with Georgia Southwestern State University and South Georgia Technical College are donated their time and work to build a home for a South Georgia mother and her seven children.

The home located on South Dudley Street will soon be ready for certified nursing assistant and mother, Tiffany Simms, and her seven children.

The Fuller Center for Housing, volunteers, and local partners like Georgia Southwestern State University, Phoebe Sumter, and South Georgia Technical College helped make this home a reality.

“It has been something I’ve thought about and wanted for a really long time, but financially it wasn’t in my reach. Every time I went closer something would happen, and it set me back. When I got that phone call, I was like it’s finally happening,” Sims said.

Sims was required to put in 500 sweat hours and is responsible for mortgage payments with a zero percent interest rate. Seeing the impact of today gives the Americus- Sumter Fuller Center president Jody Wade the fuel to help others.

“Every family deserves to live in a fair, decent home, and that is why we keep going. We are keeping the Fuller legacy alive,” Wade said.

The president of Georgia Southwestern State University Michelle Johnston is also looking forward to more community projects students can participate in.

“This is a way of life. This is not something you just do on a project or one time this should be our way of life,” Johnston said.

Sims says this home is a step in the right direction, and she’s grateful to everyone who made this possible.

Volunteers are still putting the finishing touches on this home, and the president of The Fuller Center for Housing hopes this home will be completely finished by the end of the week.
