AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) — Neighbors in Americus said a collapsing roadway with a steep drop-off into a ditch is creating a dangerous situation for drivers, warning it may be only a matter of time before someone is severely hurt.

Along the busy Amory Drive, the edge of the pavement is visibly failing, leaving little to no shoulder and a sharp drop just feet from passing traffic.

“That’s a very busy street,” Erma Fish, a neighbor along Armory Drive, said. “The school buses come through there. You should see how dangerous it is when a bus is coming out of Bronco [Drive], turning to go down Armory. They’re about to go over in that cliff.”

Frequent drivers along the road have almost no room for error, especially at night or during rain, when visibility and traction are reduced.

Neighbors who live by said the deteriorating roadway is not an isolated problem. Mario Mitchell, a resident of Americus, documents on social media other roads he says are in ‘dangerous’ conditions.

“Everybody started commenting, calling and inboxing me, saying, ‘Look at my neighborhood, it’s dangerous.’ Especially Bronco [Drive], they said it was dangerous.”

But Mitchell said Armory Road stands out because of the collapsing edge and steep ditch below.

Residents are calling on the city to act before a serious crash forces a response.

“No one has been hurt thus far, but eventually someone is going to go over in that cliff,” Fish said.

Until then, Fish, Mitchell and other residents said they will continue to navigate the roadway with caution and speak up when they see drivers in danger.
