CAIRO, Ga. (WCTV) - The City of Cairo made history Monday night with the swearing in of its first-ever woman Mayor Arlisha Williams, according to city officials.
The city also achieved a historic milestone during its council meeting with the appointment of Councilwoman Annette Higdon as Mayor Pro Tem, which marks “the first time both the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem roles are held by women at the same time in our city’s history,” officials said.

City officials said the milestone reflects “the strong leadership and voices that represent Cairo as we begin a new chapter together.”
During the council meeting, Councilman Demario Byrden was elected to his third term for District 2 and Councilman Jimmy Douglas was elected to his sixth term for District 4, according to the city.
