Description
ATKINSON COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Atkinson County Commission Chairman Parker Liles confirms steady progress is being made on Pearson’s water and wastewater systems, after the county took control earlier this year due to the city’s failed audits and compliance issues.
Liles said that a USDA grant is expected to arrive soon to fund critical water distribution improvements — including new pipes, lines, and hydrants — but the federal government shutdown has delayed the release of those funds.
Despite that setback, the county has pushed forward with key upgrades. Liles says the recent switch from gas to liquid chlorine has already helped clear up water discoloration for residents.
At the wastewater treatment plant, estimated costs range between $400,000 and $500,000, covering:
- Sand filter upgrades, including new media and controls (parts estimated at $65,000–$70,000, not including labor)
- A new UV system controller, expected to cost under $100,000
- Geobag purchases and pump rentals to speed up sludge removal
Lift station repairs are expected to begin soon, with final pricing anticipated next week. Contractors have made several visits as the county continues uncovering additional issues in the sewer lines and lift stations.
In the distribution system, crews are mapping valve locations, planning insert a valve installations, and repairing or replacing altitude valves at water towers.
Chairman Liles also confirms the county has signed a contract with Tindell Enterprises, naming the company as the official water systems operator to oversee day-to-day maintenance and compliance.
Another milestone: the county collected its first round of water bill payments this week, giving officials initial revenue to work with as infrastructure repairs move forward.
Atkinson County continues working with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to comply with a consent order tied to treated wastewater violations from July and August.
A water tank maintenance contract has also been secured to address lingering odor issues and improve long-term water quality. Liles says the county remains in close coordination with Georgia Rural Water Association, Tindell Enterprises, and state engineers as part of a broader plan to restore reliable service to Pearson residents.
