BERRIEN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — Residents in Berrien County are fighting a problem that many other rural areas face — washed out dirt roads. A daily form of travel, damaged by ongoing storms.

Imagine walking your child a mile in a half up the road to catch the school bus near a busy highway or your car getting stuck in the mud when you’re just trying to leave for work.

A concerned resident said, “Since January 21, we have not had our road open for a complete seven days.”

Several residents shared pictures from multiple roads where they have gotten stuck or been unable to drive, just this week.

“It’s not just a road issue, it’s a safety issue for everyone traveling especially on 37,” the concerned resident said.

The roads are under Berrien County’s public works jurisdiction, but residents said they have not gotten any help.

She said, “We have called several times, and they tell us the same thing. ‘It’s too wet. We can’t do anything. Oh, try it tomorrow when it dries up.‘ That’s not an option when it’s raining all week. It constantly just — They’re not doing anything, and it’s no apologies.”

Another resident said, “Our older neighbor is currently suffering from medical issues, and I don’t think an ambulance could get down there if he needed help.”

WALB learned that road has been washed out and graded so much that it’s down to the water table creating mud pits.

Rocks were added to specific areas this week after rain, but there’s still no permanent fix.

“I refuse to drive my truck when I go down cause I slip every single time, and I just I don’t wanna risk an accident,” the resident said.

There are still many questions for Berrien County Public Works. It is not yet known why the roads have not been repaired, whether this is a budget issue or if anyone is listening to community members' calls.

Berrien County Public Works declined an interview with WALB, but residents said they will continue to call, email and attend meetings until it is resolved.
