NASHVILLE, Ga. — Callie Nix, a senior at Berrien with a 4.0 GPA, has been named Scholar Athlete of the Week. Nix has played varsity softball and tennis all four years of high school.

When asked to describe herself, Nix did not mention her grades or athletic career.

“I’m just... I’m fun. I’m nice. I try to care more about people than I do about myself,” Nix said. “I try to help encourage others, just be themselves, have fun, especially out here (on the field).”

“You’ve got to help each other. This is what the sport’s all about,” Nix said. “Helping each other grow, have fun in here and in the classroom. You’ve got to help others, help build their grades, help them understand just what this is about. It’s a lot to balance. So it’s just a lot... it’s fun helping each other out here, especially out here and in the classroom.”

Community involvement

Nix serves as the Chamber Ambassador on the Berrien County Chamber of Commerce. She was a calendar girl for the month of August in her local newspaper. She is also a member of Nashville Methodist Church and the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“It takes a lot. You’ve got to be able to find time and be able to balance it all with everything you’ve got going on,” Nix said. “Find what you want to prioritize in life and work on that, and not just do what you want to do. You don’t have to follow others. So it’s just fun out here, being able to be like a family and play together and enjoy the time we have with each other.”

Family support

Nix said her parents are her biggest supporters.

“Knowing you’re out here playing for the sport you love or doing what you love, and having somebody in the stands or on the sidelines knowing that they’re out there supporting you and they want what’s best for you too,” Nix said. “Being able to keep those things up and keep doing them, and just being able to be a part of your community and helping others, it’s just something that helps you grow as a person and know what your community needs from you and what you can do to help them.”

Looking ahead

Nix said she wants to focus on having fun during her senior year and bring out the best in those around her.

Nix is hoping to study cardiac sonography after her senior year and would like to play softball at the next level.
