BIBB COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) — For students in Macon-Bibb, it's Attendance Awareness Week, and the district has a full schedule to encourage parents to send their kids to school.

The week-long celebration comes in line with the ongoing National Attendance Awareness Month, and the Bibb County School District has organized a full schedule throughout the week to help boost attendance.

It all kicked off with the district's Rally for Attendance on Monday morning, where parents across the district were encouraged to cheer for their kids as they leave for or arrive at school.

At L.H. Williams Elementary, cheerleaders joined in welcoming students to school. And at Miller Fine Arts Magnet Middle School, teachers and staff waved pom-poms and celebrated students' arrival.

WGXA spoke with Stephanie Key, a student counselor at L.H. Williams, who had a clear message to parents of Macon-Bibb students.

"I want to encourage parents to please send your students to school every day, on time," said Key. "We want to make sure that boys and girls are getting the best education they can. They miss out on reading and math - those skills they need in order to succeed, and if they are even one minute late, they miss instruction."

Monday was just the start, as Attendance Awareness Week will be celebrated through Friday. Check out what's planned for the remainder of the week below.
