Description

AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) — Black Voters Matter and its state and local partners are making a final push to mobilize Georgia voters two days before the midterm elections.

We Got Us campaign and bus tour

The push began Saturday, Oct. 31, as part of the We Got Us campaign and bus tour. Black Voters Matter (BVM) said the activations are designed to energize and empower voters in rural towns and cities from Valdosta to Savannah and Albany to Atlanta. The group said it also wants to remind voters they have the power to decide what happens next for their families and communities.

Election Day readiness activations include community canvassing, rallies, caravans, a block party and high-visibility engagement, BVM said.

Door-to-door outreach in Americus

On Sunday, organizers and volunteers stopped in Americus to go door to door and encourage people to vote. Young and old volunteers were in neighborhoods talking to residents and helping them get ready for Election Day.

Americus Mayor Travis Rush said, “Today, our young kids are out, our senior leaders are out in the community, just getting people excited about voting because that’s how we bring about change and how Americus, which is so important to us here is outside of Atlanta, Americus is this. So, we definitely want to make sure our voices are heard throughout this community, as well as the state of Georgia.”

BVM statement on ballot access

BVM said Black voters remain at the center of a fight for ballot access and representation. The group said threats to mail-in voting, poll closures, stricter state and federal voter ID laws, and efforts to deploy federal agents to polling precincts are becoming a reality.

BVM said that in this election cycle, voting is an act of resistance. The group said it is working on the ground to ensure that communities are prepared and informed to cast their ballots.

More stops planned

BVM will continue its mobilization efforts with more stops Monday and Tuesday in Decatur, Rincon, Atlanta and other cities.
