ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — New information is now available in a case that was originally called a road rage incident on Liberty Expressway in Albany in August.

Attorneys representing the 51-year-old who was shot say the shooting actually stemmed from a hit-and-run committed by the alleged 16-year-old shooter. On Tuesday, Sept. 22 in a bond hearing, Judge Victoria Darrisaw denied bond for the teen.

In the hearing, attorneys representing the man shot say he was actually the victim of a hit-and-run while driving his work car.

The man who was shot, William Rimes, says it was his duty to get the tag information of the person who allegedly hit him so appropriate measures could be taken with police.

WALB first reported this story Aug. 20 when the incident closed the expressway for roughly three hours.

Attorneys representing the teen say the 51-year-old allegedly blocked the 16-year-old in, approached his car, and punched the teen. Attorneys representing Rimes say that’s not true. Instead, they’re saying Rimes approached the teen’s car unarmed, and within 14 seconds, he was shot three times.

“He didn’t commit a crime, and he certainly didn’t ask to be the victim of a hit-and-run and shot and left for dead in the middle of the road. Mr. Rimes was literally just trying to get home to his family.”

Originally, the Albany Police Department released a statement saying both the teen and Rimes would face charges. Now, according to the district attorney’s office, warrants were never issued for Rimes.

When denying the teen’s bond, Judge Darrisaw cited how the teen allegedly left the scene after the shooting as one reason why she didn’t grant him bond.
