ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — An already heated gubernatorial race intensified this week after a confrontation between the candidates was captured on cellphone video.

Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms and Republican nominee Rick Jackson crossed paths Friday at the National Business League Conference outside the Atlanta Hilton. Surrounded by staff members, Bottoms confronted Jackson over a recent campaign ad that references her family.

“You’re saying things about my husband that aren’t true,” Bottoms says in the video. “I’m fair game, but please stay away from my family.”

“I hear you,” Jackson replies before the two part ways.

Bottoms later posted the clip online.

It’s an apparent reference to the attack ad that was part of a recent $87 million ad spend for the Jackson campaign.

The ad shows clips of Bottoms during her tenure as mayor of Atlanta, promising to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars. It then references an instance where a city credit card was used to purchase first-class airfare for Bottoms’ husband to the 2018 Super Bowl.

The purchase did happen, but at a campaign stop earlier in the month, shortly after the ad began running, Bottoms said Jackson was missing key context.

“I was the one that caught that error on the credit card,” she told reporters on August 14. “I caught it within ten days of returning from the Super Bowl. I wrote a check and reimbursed the City of Atlanta I realized the wrong credit card had been used.”

“The fact that there is another part of this story that he refuses to tell, speaks to his character, and he’s just an untruthful guy,” she went on.

But just a day after the confrontation over the ad, Jackson noted the instance in a Buford campaign speech.

“When she took office, Atlanta taxpayers were billed thousands of dollars for a first-class ticket for my opponent’s husband to attend the Super Bowl,” he said to a crowd of supporters. “My opponent made it clear yesterday; she does not want Georgians to hear about any of this. But let me be clear, Georgians did not want to cover her husband’s travel.”
