ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Democratic nominee for Georgia governor Keisha Lance Bottoms unveiled a new plan to help drivers on Wednesday.

Calling it her “Drive Plan,” Bottoms said the policies together would help lower fuel prices and the cost of car insurance for drivers.

The plan calls for eliminating the state auto insurance premium tax for drivers, which is currently 2.25%. It also calls for savings from that elimination to be passed onto drivers. Bottoms estimates it will put $140 annually back in the pockets of Georgia households.

According to her campaign’s research, metro-Atlanta drivers pay an average of $700 more each year for car insurance than the state average. The cost of car insurance, Bottoms said, now accounts for 15% of the average Georgian’s paycheck.

The plan also rolls back the state gas tax to 28-cents per gallon and reduce diesel tax to 31.3-cents per gallon, a savings of $80 a year, Bottoms estimates, for families with two cars.

“These steps can make a difference in the bank accounts, in the pocketbooks, of the people of this state who get up every day and work hard and just want some relief because of the cost of living in this state,” said Bottoms.

Her Drive Plan also includes a provision that would stop mid-year rate hikes on insurance premiums, holding insurers to just one rate hike annually.

Bottoms’ opponent, Republican nominee Rick Jackson, has also rolled out a plan tailored to affordability on the road.

Jackson has proposed an automatic freeze of the state gas tax when prices at the pump rise 35-cents in a week or 75-cents in a month.

“That matters to the person working that week, it matters to the parent driving a child to the school or the doctor,” Jackson said back in August. “And diesel relief matters to every family. Whether they drive a truck or not, diesel moves the foods, the medicines and the goods on our shelves.”
