ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was threatened shortly before a bomb scare during a campaign stop Tuesday at Macon’s airport.
The campaign team for Raffensperger, who is running for governor, confirmed to Atlanta News First that they received a multipage “manifesto” with Brad Raffensperger’s photo and “Boom” across his face.
Raffensperger’s campaign was expected to provide more details Wednesday.
Deputies found a “suspicious object” inside the Macon airport that was supposed to host a campaign event for Raffensperger.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Middle Georgia Regional Airport around 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday. Deputies and bomb unit K-9s found the object inside a vending machine as they swept the airport, but it was determined to be non-hazardous.
No injuries have been reported, and no travelers were inside the airport when the object was found, according to deputies. The airport has since been reopened.
“When you stand on principle, when you do the right thing, when you put people ahead of politics, not everyone will like it. In fact, some people may try to intimidate you or do you harm,” Raffensperger said in response to the threat.
He went on to say: “So yes, we are dealing with an active threat. And no, I will not back down. I’ll continue fighting for what’s right, and I’ll continue standing for Georgia — no matter what."
Raffensperger was set to speak at the airport at 10 a.m. as part of his “Standing for Georgia” fly-around tour, during which he would fly to different airports around the state.
This is a developing story. Check back with Atlanta News First as we learn more.
