Description
BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Bryan Kohberger is set to be sentenced next week after accepting a plea agreement to avoid the death penalty. Kohberger has admitted to the November 13, 2022, murders of four University of Idaho students: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle.
The sentencing hearing in the case of State v. Kohberger is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. MT on Wednesday, July 23, at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise. The proceedings will be publicly livestreamed, with an overflow room available at the courthouse for additional viewers. Idahonews.com will carry the live stream here and on our YouTube page.
The plea agreement, which came as a surprise just weeks before jury selection was set to begin, appears to have split the approval of the four victims' families. Kaylee Goncalves' family has been the most vocal in their opposition to the plea deal, saying the prosecutors and the State of Idaho let them down.
Public seating for those attending in person will be on a first-come, first-served basis until the courtroom reaches capacity. Attendees are reminded that no glass or large water containers are permitted, and entry into the courtroom will not be allowed while court is in session.
Attendees are urged to familiarize themselves with existing orders governing courtroom and courthouse conduct. Interviews, recording, or photography inside the courthouse are strictly prohibited, and violations will result in denial of courtroom access.
