CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) – The City of Cairo is moving forward with long-awaited improvements to its Wastewater Treatment Plant, following a pre-construction meeting with Watkins & Associates.
The project is being funded by a $4.1 million GEFA loan, with up to $3.6 million in principal forgiveness — a major financial win for both the city and its residents.
Key upgrades include:
- Enhanced orbital disks
- A new grit removal system
- Updates to the belt press system
- Other vital equipment enhancements
While the improvements may not be visible day-to-day, city officials emphasize their importance in maintaining essential infrastructure. These upgrades will improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment, protect the environment, promote public health, and ensure the city is well-prepared for future growth.
“This is another step forward in keeping Cairo strong, clean, and ready to grow,” city officials said.
Construction is expected to begin soon as the city takes this important step toward a more sustainable future.
