CANADA (TNND) — Authorities are investigating after a Canadian citizen died Monday while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the agency.
Johnny Noviello, 49, was found unresponsive on Monday at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center in Miami, a statement read. Officials said medical staff responded immediately and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator shock and called 911.
He was pronounced dead by the Miami Fire Rescue Department at 1:35 p.m., ICE said.
The Canadian consulate was notified of his death on Thursday, according to the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand.
“Canadian consular officials are urgently seeking more information from US officials,” she said, adding that further details will not be provided to respect the family's privacy.
Noviello was arrested by ICE at the Florida Department of Corrections Probation office on May 15 and issued a notice to appear and charged with removability, “having been convicted of a violation of any law or regulation relating to a controlled substance,” ICE said in its news release.
He entered the United States in 1988 with a legal visa and became a lawful permanent resident in 1991, according to the agency. In October 2023, he was convicted in Volusia County for racketeering, trafficking Oxycodone and Hydrocodone, and sentenced to 12 months in jail.
ICE noted that detained migrants have access to 24-hour emergency care while in custody and "remains committed to ensuring that all those in its custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments."
His death comes as the Trump administration cracks down on immigration with sweeping arrests across the United States.
Noviello is the 10th person to die in ICE custody this year, according to the agency's website.
