Description

(CNN) - Federal officials have declared that the summer cyclospora outbreak tied to iceberg lettuce that made thousands of people sick is over.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made the declaration in an update Friday morning.

More than 11,000 people in 20 states were infected with the parasite, which led to intestinal illnesses, including diarrhea.

Two deaths have been linked to the outbreak.

The outbreak began in July and grew to be the largest on record in the U.S. Many of the people who got sick ate at Taco Bell, which prompted the fast-food chain to remove lettuce from its menus at some locations.

The Food and Drug Administration traced the infected lettuce to Taylor Farms and one of its production facilities in Mexico.

In mid-July, the company announced it had removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market and issued a recall.

Even with the outbreak’s official end, the FDA will continue its investigation of cyclospora infections linked to the recalled lettuce.
