Description

CLINCH COUNTY, Ga (WALB) - As of April 22, Clinch County officials say no homes have been destroyed by the Pineland Road Fire, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been widespread damage. Outcast Hunting Club, just off of Pineland Road, has turned to ash.

What was once a thriving hunt club is now a landscape of smoke and char after the fire grew from 4,000 acres on Saturday to more than 16,000 acres by Wednesday.

25 campers, four wheelers, and ATVs were all destroyed.

Mike Leviner is an Outcast Hunting Club member and retired firefighter, with 31 years on the line he tells me he knows firsthand what wildfire can do.

“It’s absolutely heartbreaking. It’s devastating. We’ve lost 25 campers in here, multiple four-wheelers, ATVs... The sweat, blood and tears we’ve poured into it over the last 12 years is what really hurts,” Leviner said.

The Georgia Forestry Commission says fire danger remains extreme, with wind-driven flames and historic drought fueling the fire’s spread.

As of Wednesday, 64 homes and 37 minor structures are currently threatened, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC). Key risks include:

    • Residential properties and outbuildings
    • Commercial timber resources
    • Hunting camps and bee operations

The region is experiencing exceptional drought, very low humidity (below 20%) and high fire danger indicators, GFC said.

“They got the worst of conditions. As dry as it can be, the wind was blowing 25 miles an hour. You literally could not outrun the fire if you were on the ground. So what they’re doing right now in their containment efforts, they’re doing the best job they can,” Leviner said.

Leviner said the landowner has already expressed a willingness to eventually restore the club.
