Description

MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — Residents in Colquitt County and the surrounding areas will soon have another option for healthcare access.

Colquitt Regional Health System broke ground on its new medical tower on Monday, Sept. 21.

The new four-story tower will increase bed capacity from 99 to 155, increase the number of physicians, and create almost 500 new jobs across several departments.

The tower will be named after Steve and Teresa Hufstetler, who generously donated $5 million to the project.

“One of the reasons we’re building this is because our volume has increased so much in surgery areas, as well as OB. Market share shows that they’re driving in from Tifton and Thomasville areas as well as Valdosta,” said Nicole Stringer, Director of Development at the hospital.

With Moultrie, Colquitt County and surrounding counties being more rural areas, expanding access to healthcare is important now more than ever.

“We have a lot of single-income families and single-vehicle families, so being able to provide care at home without having to go 2 or three hours down the road for a doctor’s appointment or surgery or something- that’s very important to a lot of our patients and the people that we take care of,” said Dr. Woodwin Weeks, Chief Academic Officer & Chief of Pediatrics at the hospital.

Along with the medical side, the number of job opportunities the new facility will bring will also increase. In addition to the nearly 500 jobs, 35 new providers across multiple specialties will become available.

There will also be an increase in healthcare-related local spending and status & recruiting power.

The tower is expected to be completed by May 2028.
