DOUGHERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Dougherty County Commissioner Anthony Jones is requesting changes be made to the intersection of Nelms Road and the Liberty Expressway.

“We’re excited about trying to get something done down here. To make it safe at this intersection. This is a terrible intersection, it’s like a football field, trying to cross that thing, it looks like the car is way up the road but man it’s right on you so fast”

According to the Dougherty County Police Department, 24 crashes have occurred at this intersection since 2020.

Commissioner Jones received several requests to improve safety at the intersection following the death of 20-year-old Alicia Cunningham, who died on May 21, 2025. Cunningham was attempting to cross the Liberty Expressway when police believe she failed to yield to a dump truck.

Jones is proposing that the intersection be converted to an R-Cut design to enhance safety. An R-Cut intersection only allows right turns from Nelms Road, preventing drivers from crossing four lanes of traffic. Drivers wishing to turn left onto the Liberty Expressway would first turn right, then make a U-turn at a designated turnaround lane.

Commissioner Jones will host a town hall meeting with the Georgia Department of Transportation to discuss the plan. That Meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 3, at Lighthouse Ministries at 2320 Liberty Expy, Albany, GA 31705. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Members of the public are encouraged to attend the meeting.
