WASHINGTON (7News) — The military parade may be over, but D.C. city officials said the work is just beginning.
A day after tanks, armored vehicles, and military equipment rolled down Constitution Avenue in celebration of the Army’s 250th birthday, teams of engineers and street crews are now combing through the aftermath—assessing damage and lifting temporary protections from city roads.
Some of the roads around the National Mall remain closed on Monday morning.
On Sunday, local and federal engineers, including the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration, and D.C.’s Department of Transportation, fanned out across the National Mall and surrounding corridors.

“Heavy military vehicles—some weighing upwards of 60 tons—were routed along reinforced sections of road,” said Cpl. Jesse Curry, Director and Chief of Engineers. “We’ll come back through and do exactly what we did before—assess everything with our partners.”
In preparation for the parade, the city installed more than 200 steel plates and rubber mats to protect D.C.’s historic streets. Each plate weighed more than 1,000 pounds, and as of Sunday evening, crews were seen using heavy equipment to lift the final ones from Ohio Drive, Constitution Avenue, and Independence Avenue.
The citywide cleanup effort is now in full swing. Workers are dismantling bleachers, stages, risers, and fencing that lined the Mall—efforts expected to stretch into mid-week. Homeland Security officials confirmed there were no arrests during the parade or festival, and D.C. Fire and EMS reported assisting 48 people and transporting 31 for various medical incidents.
“The goal is to return these main roads to commuters by Monday morning,” Curry told 7News. “We’ll be all hands on deck to make that happen.” While initial assessments suggest the reinforced roadways held up well under pressure, a full inspection could take days. Officials warn some road closures will remain in effect while crews finalize their evaluations and remove remaining infrastructure.
