COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — A deadly crash is under investigation in the Douglas area after the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) said a driver ran a red light and struck another vehicle on Thursday, Aug. 27.

According to GSP, troopers were dispatched around 9:54 p.m. Thursday to the crash at GA 31 and Bowens Mill Road in Coffee County.

GSP said one vehicle was traveling north on GA 31 and approaching the intersection of Bowens Mill Road. A second vehicle was traveling west on Bowens Mill Road toward GA 31.

According to GSP’s preliminary investigation, the westbound vehicle entered the intersection on a green light when it was hit by the northbound vehicle. GSP said the northbound driver failed to stop for a solid red traffic light.

The front of the northbound vehicle hit the driver’s side of the westbound vehicle, according to GSP.

The impact caused the westbound vehicle to rotate counterclockwise, overturn onto its right side, and eventually stop on its roof in the roadway on Bowens Mill Road.

The northbound vehicle came to rest in the left northbound lane of GA 31.

According to GSP, no one in either car was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

GSP said the driver of the westbound vehicle was partially ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries.

Georgia State Patrol has not released the name of the victim or the drivers involved as the crash remains under active investigation.

GSP said the information released so far is preliminary. More details are expected to be released as the investigation continues.
