Description

EDISON, Ga. (WALB) — Deshon Brock has been named the new head football coach at Calhoun County, returning to south Georgia after spending the past five years at Bradwell Institute in Savannah.

Brock previously coached at Mitchell County from 2017 to 2020 before his stint at Bradwell Institute.

“Being from here or coaching down this way before, the caliber athlete in southwest Georgia is next to none,” Brock said. “I enjoy my time at Mitchell, and feel as if we can come over here to Calhoun County and kind of relive that experience and have that type of winning come over here at Calhoun County.”

Building an 11-man program

Calhoun County has played more eight-man football than 11-man in recent years, presenting a unique challenge for the new coach.

“By teaching the fundamentals, getting back to the basics, and once they get familiar with how you want to play in our scheme, they’ll fall in love with the game and grow those numbers and ultimately grow the wins,” Brock said.

Brock’s motto is “earn everything,” and he plans to build the program brick by brick. He said he wants to score points and play an exciting brand of football.

Calhoun County will be non-region for the first two years. Brock said he is looking to make the playoffs in year three, the first year in region competition.

Basketball athletes to football

Calhoun County is known for its basketball program. Brock said he spoke with Coach Shaw about getting basketball players on the football field.

“He assured me that those kids will be playing football and they will be out there,” Brock said. “A couple of times that I’ve been out here to Calhoun County, I’ve met with them. They assure me, Coach, we’re going to play.”

Background

Brock is originally from Leesville, Louisiana, and is a military brat. He played quarterback at Mississippi Valley State University for Willie Tieden, who was Jerry Rice’s quarterback.

He started his coaching career at Long County High School before moving to Mitchell County and then Bradwell Institute.

Brock is a father of four. His son plays football in Texas and will transfer in the fall. He also has twins and a 15-year-old daughter, Amelia.

His first official day will be in May, though he said he will be back and forth until then.
