WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Department of Justice announced the "largest coordinated healthcare fraud effort" in the agency's history on Monday.
The DOJ says 324 defendants are being charged for their involvement in healthcare fraud schemes. The DOJ says $14.6 billion in false claims were made.
We are announcing today charges against 324 defendants for their alleged participation in healthcare fraud schemes, involving approximately $14.6 billion in false claims submitted to Medicare, Medicaid, and other healthcare programs."
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz joined DOJ, FBI and DEA officials for a news conference on the takedown.
The fact that it's even possible that you could have $15 billion to play in this endeavor is shameful. But that's how we're being attacked now and it's not done by small-town operators," Oz said. "These are organized syndicates who are designing to hurt America."
Oz says CMS is one of the largest targets of all with these fraudsters, as the agency accounts for $1.7 trillion in disbursements.
"It's a big target on our side and they can pierce the veil of protections by just getting identifier numbers from our seniors or Medicaid recipients or others," Oz said.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino posted about the announcement on X, writing, "Public corruption will not be tolerated as the Director and I vigorously pursue bad actors who violated their oaths to all of us. We view the theft of public funds the same way. It’s a crime against all of us. Today, in conjunction with the DOJ and our federal partners, we are announcing the results from the largest healthcare fraud investigation, as measured by financial losses, in DOJ history."
Bongino says the investigation spanned 50 federal districts, resulting in nearly $3 billion in false claims. It also included the illegal distribution of over 15 million pills.
The FBI seized $245 million, and with the 324 defendants, 96 medical professionals were charged, Bongino shared.
"Results matter. Talk is cheap. And this is not even the beginning of the beginning. If you’re stealing from the public, or violating your oath to serve, then we’re coming for you too. God bless America, and all those who defend Her," Bongino wrote.
FBI Director Kash Patel also shared his praise of the takedown, writing, "$245 million seized, hundreds of defendants and medical professionals charged, and $15 billion in losses prevented in the largest coordinated healthcare fraud takedown in history. Well done to all state and federal partners who pushed this."
