DOUGHERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — Dougherty County commissioners approved a resolution Monday, June 1, for a $9.2 million federal grant aimed at improving road safety in the Albany area.
The commission voted to approve the resolution for the 2026 Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Implementation Grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The joint City and County application totals $9,210,800.
County Administrator Deron King says the application will now be submitted to the state office for approval, with several roads targeted for improvements, most of them in District 6.
“It’s going to be shoulder work. Shoulder improvements are going to be done on Tarva Road, for one,” King said. “This program provides for safety improvements within your area to help people slow down.”
King says the ultimate goal of the program is eliminating traffic accidents altogether.
“It’s a zero vision process for this program, zero accidents along the whole roadway. That’s the goal of the program,” King said.
The Safe Streets for All program is a federal initiative designed to help communities reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on roadways. The county will now wait to learn if the state approves the project.
