GRADY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - A routine patrol in Grady County ended with a DUI arrest after deputies discovered a driver who managed to get two vehicles stuck in the mud before passing out behind the wheel of one of them.

According to the Grady County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened Wednesday afternoon near Highway 188 and Barnett’s Creek, where a deputy found two vehicles stranded in the mud.

During the investigation, deputies determined the driver had first driven one vehicle into the muddy area while intoxicated. Rather than seeking help, the driver reportedly retrieved a second vehicle in an attempt to pull the first one free.

That effort also failed, leaving both vehicles stuck.

Deputies then found the driver passed out behind the wheel of the second vehicle, which was still running. The driver was determined to be intoxicated and was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

Sheriff Martin Earl Prince said the situation could have ended much differently, noting that Highway 188 is a heavily traveled roadway with many families and residents living nearby.

“Driving under the influence is a choice, and it’s a bad one,” Prince said. “Every decision made after getting behind the wheel impaired only increases the danger to everyone else on the road.”

Fortunately, no innocent motorists or nearby residents were injured before deputies intervened.

The Grady County Sheriff’s Office said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for impaired driving and will continue aggressively enforcing DUI laws to help keep local roads safe.

Officials encourage anyone who has been drinking or is impaired to make a safe plan by calling someone for a ride, arranging transportation or staying where they are rather than getting behind the wheel.

“Make the right choice,” Prince said. “No destination is worth risking a life.”
