ENIGMA, Ga. (WALB) -The people of Enigma are hopeful that the town is getting back on track after months of turmoil and chaos.

WALB has done extensive coverage of the town’s issues. Those issues include financial woes that cause the city to shut down, the mayor’s arrest after allegedly assaulting a city council member, a heated exchange between councilmen resulting in one’s arrest, and more.

Monday, May 5, the city council voted to hire a police chief after months without law enforcement. Residents are hoping these changes will help bring order.

“We have a big problem with drugs in this town so I’m really glad we have someone here that’s going to restore the law enforcement,” said resident Lisa Webb.

Right now, the city is operating under different hours to catch up on requirements and mandatory reports to become compliant with the state.

The city clerk says work is being done to bring city records up to speed. The council voted to hire an assistant to help with compliance requirements.

Webb said, “We need to clean this town up, things have been handled wrong and need to be handled by the charter. and now I’m hoping and praying we can do that.”

Councilman Ronald Harbin said it’s time to move forward.

“Times are changing and Enigma can’t stay in the rut it’s been in forever, everything changes,” he said.

Residents say they hope this is the start to new beginnings.
