ARLINGTON COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Helicopters are facing even tighter restrictions near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) established new rules for the airspace that has been under tight scrutiny ever since the January 29 midair collision that killed 67 people.

In a statement released on June 12, the FAA detailed the changes in the map below:

On the left is the old map for helicopters. On the right is the new one.

The bright green lines show where helicopters used to fly, and the dotted red line shows the new route in the area.

The FAA said the shift moves traffic further from the airport, creating safer distances between helos and other aircraft.

"A new Broad Creek Transition has been established for helicopters traveling south of the airport, creating greater vertical separation from commercial aircraft on final approach to the airport," the FAA said in a statement.

The new zones became effective June 12.

"The new safety measures do not change permanent restrictions, route closures, and procedures for urgent missions announced in March after the National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary recommendations. The FAA requires all aircraft operating around DCA to broadcast their position and identification using ADS-B Out, with very limited exceptions," the FAA statement explained.

7News spoke with travelers who support the changes.

"The restricted airspace is so crazy around the D.C. area," Keith Burton said while waiting for his flight back to Dallas. "You got the Washington [Monument], you got the Pentagon. You can’t fly over certain areas, so it’s like the airspace is crazy. You can only fly like right here," he said while motioning to a narrow pathway with his hands.

"I’m for the restrictions," Ramona Badley said on her way back to Cleveland. "I think common sense isn’t too common, but I think it could've come sooner."

The restriction change follows Senate committee leaders' calls for independent investigations and audits into the safety failures or protocols that may have contributed to the deadly collision.
