Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -Close to 900 runners took to the streets Saturday for the Albany Marathon — and one racing chair was among them.
Kevin Enners and his father, Rich, traveled from Marietta, Georgia, to compete. The pair have participated in the Albany Marathon approximately six times. Kevin has cerebral palsy and pedals in a chair with wheels while his father follows behind on a bicycle.
‘Nothing like seeing your child out there’
Rich Enners said the dynamic between him and his son keeps him motivated.
“You’ve got to have thick skin because he keeps telling me I’m getting fat and old and slow,” Rich said. “But there’s nothing like seeing your child out there. That’s what keeps me going on. And if it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be doing this.”
Inspiring others on the course
The Enners say the Albany Marathon is one of their favorites, citing the support they receive at the finish line. They said they have also heard from other runners who say seeing them on the course motivates them to finish.
“We’re doing this because Kevin wants to do it,” Rich said. “But we also want to make sure that other people can leverage what we’ve done. We don’t want to go down the path and not help somebody. And so the more we do this, the more that’s the more important thing for us. So we want to share this with people.”
From the finish line to the newsroom
Kevin holds a journalism degree from Kennesaw State University and works as a communications manager for the Kyle Pease Foundation, where he tells the stories of other athletes with disabilities who compete in marathons.
