Description
TACOMA, Wash. — A deadly rollover crash and fire involving a semi-truck closed both directions of Interstate 5 in Tacoma Tuesday morning.
Three southbound lanes have reopened.
A Washington State Department of Transportation camera with a timestamp of 4:46 a.m. showed the fiery aftermath near S 84th St.
The driver of the semi was killed in the crash, Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo said.
Dattilo said the semi-truck hit the center barrier, rolled over and caught fire. A light pole fell across the northbound lanes. Debris from the crash was scattered across both sides of the freeway, and crews are making repairs to the center divider, which was damaged in the crash.
Traffic was diverted to off-ramps.
Troopers said cars in the southbound lanes hit debris but no one was hurt.
Crews from West Pierce Fire & Rescue put out the flames. Once the fire was out, the mangled wreckage was unrecognizable as a semi-truck.
At 10:19 a.m., WSDOT said a loader was moving debris into an industrial-sized dumpster on I-5. By noon, progress had been made on the cleanup of the northbound lanes, but there is still no ETA for reopening the northbound lanes.
However, WSDOT said repairs on the center barrier were nearly complete. That will likely allow the final southbound lane to reopen.
Drivers should delay their trips into the Tacoma area and expect an extended closure of the northbound lanes.
