Description

MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) - A historic home in Moultrie sustained heavy damage after a fire on Saturday, March 7.

The Barber-Tucker House, located at the corner of 3rd Street and 7th Avenue in Moultrie, caught fire, leaving behind significant damage. Moultrie Fire Chief Chad Kilgore said the age of the structure contributed to how quickly it burned.

“It’s an extremely old house with balloon construction and crews. They went in, done the best they could, and the fire went up into the walls and got into the attic. It was extremely hot, and it burnt quick,” Kilgore said.

According to Faye Bridwell, an employee at the Museum of Colquitt County History, the house was built in 1905 by Henry W.H. Barber, who played a major role in bringing telephone service to Moultrie. The home was later converted into a bed and breakfast.

Bridwell said the damage is a significant loss for the community.

“It was devastating because this is a big part of our history, and we don’t have enough of our history left. To know it’s gone — it’s just like a big loss. It is a loss for our town,” Bridwell said.

Judy Folk, who lives on the same street as the Barber-Tucker House, said the fire was difficult to witness.

“It’s just sad. It’s just such a historical home in this area. It was just very sad,” Folk said.

Crews are investigating the scene to determine the cause of the fire. Additional details will be released as they become available.
