AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - Healthy Sumter is helping families get access to nutritious options through its fresh produce giveaways in Americus.
According to a study done by Stacker, about 13.3 percent of people in Sumter County face food insecurity. The events provide fruits and vegetables at no cost, giving residents a healthier option.

Volunteer Stephen Woodson said the partnership between Phoebe Sumter and Flint River Fresh makes the giveaways possible.
“This event is very important for all communities because in South Georgia, we are in an area that is low, impoverished. So with food insecurities and the partnership with Phoebe Sumter and Flint River Fresh, this is an awesome opportunity to serve the people in our communities,” Woodson said.
Organizers said the goal is not just to provide food, but to encourage healthier lifestyles while making sure families have consistent access to the resources they need.
