WORTH COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — Two people are dead after a crash Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the intersection of State Route 32 and State Route 300 in Worth County.

Worth County Coroner Jimmy Nelms confirmed the crash to WALB. He said he is working to notify the victims’ families.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unknown at this time.

History of crashes at the intersection

The intersection has been the site of multiple crashes in recent years.

In July, one person was life-flighted from the intersection after they were trapped in a vehicle following a crash there.

In April, authorities said a drunk driver hit and killed Worth County teacher Jim “Jimbo” Houston near the intersection. His pickup was rear-ended by a driver authorities said was under the influence.

A year earlier, investigators said a driver’s failure to yield led to a fiery crash at the intersection.

Many community members and leaders have pushed for the intersection to be redesigned.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is moving forward with plans to build a roundabout at the intersection. That project is in development and is scheduled to be let in Fiscal Year 2029, GDOT said.

Until then, GDOT said a temporary R-CUT design will be installed. The design would prevent drivers on SR 32 from going straight through the intersection or making a left turn. Drivers would instead be forced to turn right onto SR 300. It will not affect SR 300 traffic movements.

GDOT said the R-CUT design is a quick response project that will be put out for bid. The agency is projecting the work to be completed by the end of the year.
