ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — State and local law enforcement plan to maintain a heavy presence on roadways for the remainder of the New Year’s travel holiday period.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety says anyone caught driving while under the influence will be arrested. During the Christmas holiday travel period in Georgia, 15 people died on the state’s highways.

Georgia State Patrol (GSP), along with local police departments and sheriff offices, say they’re committed to enforcing the law to keep families safe.

Holiday enforcement statistics

So far during the New Year’s travel period, the Georgia Department of Public Safety reports two people died on state roadways. 92 people have been arrested for driving under the influence.

Law enforcement reports at least four DUI crashes with injuries.

Maurice Raines, deputy director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, said driving under the influence is preventable.

“Being under the influence of alcohol is a decision that is, to me is senseless. I can’t emphasize ‘senseless’ enough. That it could cost you thousands of dollars. It could affect your life. It affects your driving record for life. It affects your insurance... I mean, it’s unacceptable, and it’s 100% preventable,” Raines said.

In addition to drunk drivers, law enforcement is also looking for distracted drivers and those not wearing seatbelts, officials said.
