ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Leaders on both sides of the aisle are reacting to the shooting death of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday at a college campus in Utah.

Kirk was no stranger in the Peach State. He campaigned for now-President Donald Trump last year, and his “You’re Being Brainwashed” tour stopped in Athens.

Now, leaders are condemning the political violence.

Gov. Brian Kemp has ordered the state flags to be lowered to half-mast in Kirk’s honor until Sunday.

In honor of Charlie Kirk’s impactful life, I am lowering the flags of the United States and Georgia to half-staff on state buildings and grounds from now until sunset on Sunday. Please join Marty, the girls, and me in praying for his family and for the healing of our nation. pic.twitter.com/DRQgrdAVVp

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said the political violence is “un-American.”

“I want to speak clearly and firmly: political violence has no place in our country. It is un-American, it undermines our democracy, and it dishonors the sacrifices of those who came before us,” Raffensperger wrote. “Disagreements should always be settled through debate, elections, and the rule of law —not intimidation or violence. We must stand together in rejecting violence and recommitting ourselves to civility, respect, and the principles that make our nation strong.”

I am shocked and horrified by the news Charlie Kirk was shot in Utah and pray for his recovery, as well as the community at Utah Valley University. Political violence is unacceptable.

Georgia U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff said he was “shocked and horrified” and said he was praying for his recovery, adding that “political violence is unacceptable.”

Josh McKoon, the chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, asked everyone to pray for Kirk.

Statement from Josh McKoon, Chairman of the @GaRepublicans :Charlie Kirk has been shot during an event in Utah. I would ask everyone to please pray right now for Charlie and his family.

I believe in the power of prayer and the best thing any of us can do right now is to…

When the news of his passing came out, McKoon made a call for the death penalty “for those convicted of this heinous act.”

Georgia’s U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock also posted his condemnation of political violence on X.

The attack on Charlie Kirk this afternoon is awful and deeply appalling. I’m praying for him and his family. Political violence is NEVER acceptable and we must condemn it in every form.

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said that she is praying the “country rises up and ends this,” referring to the political violence.

“They just shot Charlie Kirk,” she wrote on Truth Social. “A married young man and father, who stands on college campuses and encourages young people to get married, have children, stop abortion, and simply live a life for God.”

Former Georgia congressman and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich posted an op-ed on The New York Times, in which he said Kirk’s assassination is raising the fear of political violence in the U.S.

According to the Associated Press, a law enforcement official said Kirk is in “critical condition” at a hospital.

Washington D.C. is reeling from the assassination of Conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Kirk is the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA. The organization also confirmed he was shot, according to the Associated Press.

Videos posted to social media from Utah Valley University show Kirk speaking into a handheld microphone while sitting under a white tent emblazoned with the slogans “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.”
