Description
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) approved a plan on July 1, 2025, to keep Georgia Power base rates “stable and predictable through at least the end of 2028,” according to a press release from Georgia Power.
Storm costs, including the impact of Hurricane Helene, were not discussed and will be addressed in a separate proceeding.
Current Georgia Power base rates have been in place since 2022 and are the result of agreements between Georgia Power and Georgia PSC Public Interest Advocacy Staff.
In the press release, Kim Greene (chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power) states, “The rate freeze resulting from this plan is a great result for customers, balancing the mutual benefits of extraordinary economic growth among all stakeholders and helping to ensure that we remain equipped to continue supporting growth in this state.”
Georgia Power plans to “seek recovery through base electric rates of reasonable and prudent costs related to Hurricane Helene restoration and rebuilding, as well as costs to respond to other storms through the end of 2025.”
In a separate press release from the Georgia Public Service Commission, PSC Chairman Jason Shaw states, “Customers have seen unprecedented inflation in the energy sector across the U.S. My fellow Commissioners and I urged staff and Georgia Power to come to some agreement where base rates would not increase. This is nothing but good news for Georgia Power ratepayers.”
The Georgia PSC regulatory proceeding addressing those storm costs is expected in the first half of 2026.
